KMG 3 speed or variable KnifeDogs Forums

Jan 14, 2020 The extra cost for changing to variable speed in your case would be the VFD only. Just use the existing pulleys best would be to remove the pulleys 'n shaft and mount the motor as direct drive but that takes a bit of work on the KMG. That is best, but does take some work. After using the variable speed grinder for a while, I was sold!

Jan 15, 2020 Definitely go the VFD if you can afford it. If I was to buy again I think I would get the KBAC29. It's rated up to a 3HP motor and from what I've seen is 15-20 dollars mor than the 27! So if you ever feel the need for a 3HP motor you'll be all set. Also there is a saying on here "BUY ONCE CRY ONCE!!". Good luck whatever you decide!!

Variable Speed Motor Advice for KMG Grinder BladeForums

Jul 16, 2015 I'm looking at purchasing a KMG grinder and am looking at what options I have for a variable speed motor. I see that the difference in price between just the grinder vs. grinder and variable speed is nearly a grand but I am convinced that I can do it for cheaper. I am thinking that a variac speed controller might do the trick.

From the beginning I knew that I wanted the machine to be variable speed, and after having worked with some machines with 1 to 1.5 hp variable speed motors, knew I wanted more power. Bill Cottrell located a 3hp, shunt wound, Blador DC motor on E-bay for $200! What a deal! The speed controller I had chosen was a Baldor model BC-160.

Mar 19, 2017 ( but it still runs with no wobble). i guess i got a "good" kmg just by chance. i had heard in the past some are good, some are not. i think an important feature is for the grinder to tip on its side or horizontal, which the kmg does not. if i get another one it would have to have this feature.

Jan 02, 2015 I have the 2hp KMG Variable speed and have been happy. (The 2hp, run on 110, will give you 1.5 hp max) From reading a lot of the threads on this subject I think you can't go wrong between the KMG, Esteem or Travis Wuertz grinder.

KMG grinder review..... BladeForums

Jun 14, 2002 The article on my new KMG grinder is ready for public viewing. It is rather large, with lots of pics, so loading may be slow. KMG Motor and VFD selections and requirements. Beginners

May 24, 2011 3600 rpm is a good speed for working but what you really want to know is the fpm (feet per minute) of the belt. So you can either find a motor with 3450 rpms or use a 1725 rpm motor with a larger pulley on the motor side, smaller pulley on the grinder side.

Variable Speed KMG wiring help KnifeDogs Forums

Sep 03, 2013 I just unboxed my new Variable Speed KMG-10 and I'm having a little trouble figuring out the electrical wiring. I have the 2 hp motor but I will be running it on standard 110 until my shop is wired for 220. The site says the motor will run at a max of 1.5 hp when connected to standard 110.

Yet another grinder question KnifeDogs Forums

Nov 26, 2017 So I’ve pretty much decided on the kmg with the 10 in wheel and 3HP variable speed motor. Here are a few questions I still have. Is the variable speed controller that is sold with the kmg good? Would I be better off getting it from somewhere else? Would y’all recommend the 6 inch drive wheel? The 6 vs the 4 inch is supposed to be for

The KMG: Industrial Belt Grinder Beginners Place

Oct 10, 2009 I have a KMG with 2HP 220 variable speed, 10" wheel, flat platen, some small wheels, and a work rest. I frakin love it and wouldn't change a thing except maybe to go to 3 HP which is really overkill unless you don't forge and do some really big flat ground blades.

Jul 09, 2017 Ed has some good advice. His knowledge of grinders is far great than mine. With that said I have the KMG 3 speed with the 1-1/2 horse motor. To get the 2 horse option you need 240. I have 2 120 volt plugs in my garage. So I went with the 1-1/2 horse motor. My only regret was when I bought it I only purchased the flat platen.

Kmg Grinder Questions American Bladesmith Society Forum

Is it worth running the 220 to your shop ? Yes Yes Yes and more Yes ! Here's why. My KMG, disk grinder, surface grinder, Evenheat kiln, and Lincoln 180c mig all run on 220. And in addidtion to that I'm hoping to soon add a horizontal grinder and variable speed buffer.

Beaumont KMG Bushcraft USA Forums

Jan 22, 2014 Got an 3hp KMG with VFD. The downside to it is that it's tracking isn't really accurate to the Burr King grinder. Honestly though it's an good machine and the small wheel kit and attachments are really nice and handy to have for custome metal working and I'd imagine really nice for blade work.

Aug 14, 2015 KMG. Spend to get the variable, and spend to get the larger drive wheel, and the 3 hp. You won't regret any of them. This could be the last grinder you would ever need to buy, rather than buying one $300 cheaper, and then spending another $1,800 or so in a couple of years to buy the features you missed.

TW90, KMG, or Bader 2"by 72" belt grinders, which is best

May 01, 2014 Jon, the TW90 is a very nice grinder, it has some accessories that u can't find on any other grinders ( like the magnetic surface plate ) it runs very smooth and is a work of art, but its $$$ The KMG is a nice grinder, not as refined as the TW90 and not as many bells and whistles as the tw90 either, but its less $$$, The Bader is like the KMG in most respects, but I think its a bit more

I need a grinder Tools, Supplies and Materials

Jan 27, 2013 For example, you may choose to put a 1HP, 120V, motor on to start but, later, upgrade to a higher horsepower, variable speed, setup. There is also the advantage that any of the accessories made for the KMG will work with the Grinder in a Box. Another option is the Coote grinder. I've heard good things about them.

Belt grinder: motor choice and speed control All About

Nov 29, 2009 I won't opine about the virtue of variable speed in a belt grinder, but I have very good experience with a VFD in my home shop. My single 3 HP VFD bought from a surplus dealer several decades ago is used to drive a geared-head drilling machine with integral 3-phase motor on which it would have been impossible to change to a DC motor, two lathes, a 26" bandsaw, a bench grinder, a
